Hi! So glad to have found this site. Do any of you use tools such as tweezers, cuticle trimmer, etc to assist with your picking? I have several pairs of tweezers, in the car, work, at home, purse. If I need one and can't find one I will go buy another. Also, I have been picking a scabs (I created) on the back of my head along the hair line. It is so gross, but everytime I feel back there I just HAVE to pick off the scab. The bigger the piece of scab/skin the better. Plus I enjoy the pain of picking it off. I hate to admit but I will, I also eat the skin. It soooo gross, but I do it.

Wow - you've got it all sbriggs! No worries this is the place to be honest - glad you found us:
Tools: clippers etc. are useful to clean/neaten up the tempting areas so they are less attractive to pick. But if they only turn into implements to aid your picking habit, that's no good.
Dermatillomania is the generic term for all skin picking, thought this site is obviously focused on the fingers, but its all a subset of this: http://www.fingerfreak.com/related-disorders-and-habits/dermatillomania
Dermatophagia is biting and sometimes eating the skin, so you're not alone!: http://www.fingerfreak.com/related-disorders-and-habits/dermatophagia

I have used staples, stick pins, tacks, cuticle shavers, and of course my trust nail clipper, that I have so that I can cut things off instead of picking them off (yeah, right...)

I have taken to carrying around some nail tools with me, like nail clippers and a file. Usually I use them just for reparis, but sometimes it's just too tempting to peel back that dead skin on my finger instead of clipping it short. I have recently stopped biting my nails, but now I'm obsessed with keeping the area under the nails clean by using pointy objects, such as tweezers.
Also, sbriggs, I can relate to the scalp picking. I have turned to that instead of biting and picking my fingers. It seems like I'm just replacing one destructive habit with another! Oh well...I'll keep trying.
