--not only for vanity's sake, but because I'm a classical guitarist. My fingernails are the 'picks' [irony?] I use to create tone and volume.
Despite my love for the instrument and its music, and despite the discipline required to study it, I keep biting, chewing, tearing, and peeling my nails, right down into the quick. It leaves the ends of my fingers ugly, and sometimes in pain.
Sometimes I wear acrylic nails to get the sounds I want from my guitar, but I'm bloody tired of the smelly ritual of gluing them on, which has - more than once - lead to fungal infections.
What must I do to create the self control and build the discipline I need to free myself of this? How do I neutralise the triggers, that send me to punishing myself like this?
